Thomson State Forest, 40 km north of Walhalla, is riddled with rough tracks that off-road vehicles and trail bikes negotiate with practised abandon. Note: it also includes a new 4WD Heritage Trail that begins in nearby Walhalla and takes in Donnelly Creek and many historic sights in the forest. The trees that have taken root here occasionally open out into expansive campsites where large groups settle around blazing fires, and local streams hold plenty of promise for keen anglers. Access is provided by Walhalla Rd, which is narrow and rarely straight.
